01.Meet our cooks
Fiona Mair, our home economist, has been testing kitchen appliances in CHOICE labs for 16 years and has more than 25 years' experience in the food industry. Together with Gene Ross, CHOICE photographer and passionate cook with 15 years front- and back-of-house experience, we bring you a food and cooking website with a difference.
We all have to get into the kitchen at some point and let’s face it; it’s the bare necessity of life. While some get great satisfaction from trying new recipes and spending hours in the kitchen, for most it is the same thought every day, “What am I going to cook for dinner?”
If you’re one of the latter, you can make daily cooking a lot easier for yourself by being a little prepared and having the bare essentials in your pantry. One thing we’ve learnt from testing kitchen appliances and feeding our families is that you do not need many of those fancy appliances cluttering your kitchen cupboards and benches. Manufacturers bombard us with products that promise to make our time in the kitchen easier and quicker. Most of the time though, cooking or preparing food with so many different kitchen products becomes more of a hassle than a convenience - especially the cleaning up afterwards.
Advertising, celebrity chefs and cooking shows intimidate us with their flair and creativity - not to mention how easy they make it appear. Cooking has become quite pretentious. It almost makes you feel inadequate if you don’t know how to whip up a soufflé or crème brulee. Where have our comforting, healthy, home cooked meals gone?
Being able to cook food well doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive or a work of art. If it’s done well, even basic cooking will give you the foundation to produce meals that are nutritious and delicious.
Your kitchen space may be filled with an overabundance of cookbooks, but you probably only ever refer to a couple of recipes out of the complete library. This is where Cook’s CHOICE comes in.
Cook’s CHOICE aims to be different to most online food and recipe websites. Our motto is "Food for every day not everyday food".
- Shows you simple recipes that guide you all the way.
- Helps you find passion in food and cooking
- Shows you how to get the best out of your kitchen appliances.
- Looks at what’s in season.
- Gives tips on how to reduce your food bill.
All the recipes are cooked and immediately photographed with no food styling and no Photoshop. What you see is what you will be able to create.
So welcome to the CHOICE community. Give us your input and feedback. What do you think of our recipes? What problems do you come across in the kitchen? How do you make sure your time in the kitchen is a pleasurable experience?
We’re looking forward to hearing from you.
