Lost without your smartphone? If you're going to be off-grid, you'll want a phone with a good battery life to keep you connected.

Before you roll your eyes about entitled millennials being attached to their phones, it's not just about needing to check your Twitter feed or post to Instagram. If you're in an emergency situation or in an area where power supply is sketchy, you'll want to be sure that your phone's battery won't let you down.

Our expert testers put mobile phones through their paces to give you accurate information about battery life, plus aspects like durability and GPS performance that are important when you're cut off from the world but need to stay connected.

Each of these phones is rated IP68, which means they're protected from dust and water ingress, making them suitable for use in a range of conditions, from campsites to worksites.

Here are the mobile phones we tested that have the longest battery life.

samsung galaxy note 10 5g

Big screen, long battery life and super fast speed on a 5G network make this a great all round option.

4. Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ (5G)

  • Battery score: 86%
  • Durability score: 83%
  • GPS score: 86%
  • Cost: $1999

While support for the 5G network is still growing, it looks set to become the dominant mobile network in the city and rural areas due to support from all three (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone) major networks. Expect faster speeds than a home internet broadband connection when using 5G at its best, and many times faster than the existing 4G network. The large 6.8 inch display of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ is well suited for watching the huge video files you can stream over a 5G network – but this will take a toll on the phone's very good battery life.

Do I need a power bank for my mobile phone?

"Most people own their mobile for two to three years before upgrading and you can expect your battery to last without incident over this time," says CHOICE technology guru Denis Gallagher.

"However, the battery performance (how long it lasts before a recharge) will worsen after a year or so of use. If you like your mobile and don't want to get the latest and greatest model you may want to consider a power bank for those occasional days of heavy use."

How we test mobile phones

Our experts conduct rigorous tests on each mobile phone in our dedicated test facilities.

Testers rate aspects of each phone, including:

  • Durability: We simulate falls from a table or shirt pocket up to 25 times; store the phones in hot, damp conditions; and carry out a rain test.
  • GPS: We measure for accuracy and speed.
  • Battery life: We record the time-in-use results in hours, and standby times in days.
