How we test peanut butter

Products

We tested peanut butters that are available nationally in major supermarket chains, looking at crunchy, smooth, no added sugar/salt and light varieties. A total of 47 supermarket peanut butter products were tested.

Tasting

Our experts tasted the peanut butter samples blind (without knowing the brands) in a randomised order, which was different for each expert. 

Scores

Experts independently judged all peanut butters, scoring each sample for flavour followed by texture, aroma and appearance. The CHOICE Expert Rating is made up of 80% taste and 20% nutrition (we calculated a Health Star Rating from the details in the nutrition information panel and converted it to a percentage). We recommend peanut butter products with an overall score of 80% or more.

      We set up an expert blind taste test. Each product was assigned a number and its brand concealed. For each sample tasted, the experts rated each sample out of 10 based on flavour, texture, appearance, and smell.
