Save on your energy bill

Do it yourself, or have someone do it for you – finding the best electricity provider doesn’t have to be a hassle.

How to find the best energy deal
Last updated: 15 February 2020

Electricity plans lose their value over time, as the deal the retailer lured you in on lapses or your discount period ends. The best way to save is often to switch from your current plan to a better value deal. And while that may sound like a lot of work, it doesn't have to be.

If you're prepared to switch, you have two main options.

Use a service to find the best deal and switch plans for you

Pros

  • The service compares the deals and does the hard work of poring over plans and calculating savings, along with all the switching admin.
  • They'll keep comparing for you, switching you again if they find more savings.

Cons

  •  You'll pay to use the service.

Switch yourself, using free government tools

Pros

  • You save the money you would spend on paying someone else to do the switch.
  • You stay in control of your own energy use and finances.

Cons

  • You have to do all the work yourself – and you'll have to keep checking at least every three months that you're still on the best deal.

Using a service to switch electricity plans

Switching services work like this: You upload your latest bill, and the service checks the rest of the market, using data from your bill to compare what you're paying now to what you could be paying on any cheaper plans they find. They can then switch you to your new retailer, completing most or all of the paperwork for you.

Using a switching service is an option for you if you're in a state or territory where you have a choice of energy provider: NSW, South East Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania or Victoria.

Find a better energy deal with Bill Hero

While there are plenty of energy comparison and switching services on the market, CHOICE has partnered with new service Bill Hero to help you save on energy and find the right plan for you.

Bill Hero meets CHOICE's standards for a consumer-friendly switching service: it doesn't take commissions from energy companies and it compares every publicly available deal.

We think it has merit because it's based directly on our discontinued energy switching service, Transformer. We know from experience that there are savings to be made in the electricity market, and switching away from low-value plans is one of the best ways to realise them.
