CHOICE made a submission to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sports and the Arts on improving the reporting and publishing of data on airline performance and competition.
CHOICE supports improved transparency in reporting and recommends a broader approach to capture delays and cancellations for both international and domestic flights. CHOICE’s key recommendations are that the Federal Government:
- Create formal frameworks for the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) to share information with the ACCC, the Productivity Commission and the incoming Travel Ombuds Scheme
- Ensure the list of reasons for delays and cancellations reported to BITRE and the incoming Travel Ombuds Scheme are identical.
- Expand the scope of BITRE’s reporting to include international flights.
- Ensure BITRE reports on all delays and cancellations of commercial flights in Australia, both domestic and international.
- Revise and expand the 7 day cancellation definition so there is no timeframe limit.
