Does the cult brand's new personal fan really deliver premium cooling, or is it just a lot of hot air?

CHOICE verdict

While the Dyson HushJet is convenient and versatile and comes in a few nice colours, we don’t think it’s worth the hefty price tag. Save your money and buy something much cheaper that will do the job just as well.

What is the Dyson HushJet Mini Cool fan?

Dyson, the company that brought you a dozen different product categories reimagined, has once again gone down the path of creating a unique take on an existing product type.

It’s supposed to be a personal fan – a very small one – but as far as we’re concerned it’s a bit of a flop (read on to find out why).

Personal fans are not new – they’ve been out for over 100 years, and new designs have been constantly entered into the market in the hope of capturing people’s attention and dollars.

Dyson’s entry is lightweight and slim – weighing about 212g and measuring 38mm in diameter, roughly the width of a watch face and the weight of an average smartphone, and powered by the same lithium-ion battery technology. It claims to deliver up to six hours of run time on a single charge, depending on your chosen airflow speed.

A hand holding the Dyson HushJet mini fan.
It certainly looks sleek and expensive, but the performance is similar to any old handheld fan.

Key features

This pocket-sized fan is available in three colours, comes with a two-year warranty and includes a travel pouch, neck dock (to hang the fan from your neck), charging stand and USB-C charging cable.

The bladeless design means there’s nothing exposed or fast-spinning, which makes it safer to use, and the range of colours means it doesn’t look out of place next to your other tech.

The accessories supplied with the fan make it flexible – you can hang it from your neck, place it on a desk, or simply hold it. Its head can also be turned to suit how it’s being used.

Does the Dyson personal fan actually cool you down?

While it certainly looks good, this little fan falls down when it comes to performance.

I’ve used personal fans since the 70s, where those little plastic fans were powered by AA batteries and I’ve also tried the newest lithium-ion-powered neck fans that hang around your neck and direct the air where it’s useful.

Usually they have a spread and force of air that suits the intended use, but the Dyson is a small needle of air which doesn’t move much volume.

While the volume of air it moves is minimal, it manages to make a real racket in doing so

And speaking of volume, while the volume of air it moves is minimal, it manages to make a real racket in doing so. Once you put it on the maximum speed (which you will likely want to do in an effort to actually cool down), it’s hard to hear your office neighbours over its whine. So much for hush.

In short, it’ll cool you down, but no more than other personal fans that cost significantly less.

Is it worth it?

While the bladeless design and colours may look good or suit your style, for the amount of money it’s going to cost you, we think there are better options that move more air.
