These energy-efficient machines will clean your clothes without cleaning out your wallet.

Washing machines can be a bit of a grudge purchase. Yes, having clean clothes is lovely, but there are far more enjoyable ways to spend hundreds – or even thousands – of dollars.

But spending more money won't necessarily buy you a better washing machine: there are plenty of more affordable models on the market that performed well in our lab tests, matching or even beating more expensive machines.

There are plenty of affordable models on the market that performed well in our lab tests

In fact, of the 15 machines our experts recommend, five of them cost less than $1500 – so if you check our detailed washing machine reviews before you buy you can save yourself hundreds on a new front loader.

"While we find price doesn't necessarily correlate with performance, that doesn't mean just buy the cheapest machine you can find and hope for the best – there are plenty of duds at the bottom of the price range, so it pays to do your research," says CHOICE whitegoods expert Ashley Iredale.

Are front loader washing machines worth the extra money?

Front loaders are generally a bit more expensive than top loaders, due to how they're built.

But while you'll pay more upfront for a front loader, you'll pay less in water and electricity bills over the entire life of the appliance, so it could end up costing about the same or even less in the long run.

While you'll pay more upfront for a front loader, you'll pay less in water and electricity bills

Not to mention that front loaders are more gentle on your clothes than top loaders, so you won't have to replace your favourite t-shirts as quickly if you use a front loader – that's more savings!

But that doesn't mean you need to spend a fortune for a great-performing front-loading washing machine. Exclusively for CHOICE members, we'll reveal the five machines that deliver great performance on a budget.

The front loader washing machines not to buy

Knowing what not to buy is just as useful as knowing what to buy. Here are the washing machines our experts rated the lowest.

You'll notice that some of them are quite cheap – but even at these low prices, our experts don't recommend them.

And several cost $2000 and more (much more, in one case), so if you bought one of these hoping for a high-performance washing machine you'll be sadly disappointed – and out of pocket.

The best washing machine brands in Australia

Each year, we rank washing machine brands, assessing them on their average test scores, reliability, customer satisfaction and how many of their products score the coveted CHOICE expert seal of approval.

Here are the best brands for 2023, along with their CHOICE Best Brand scores:

  1. Miele – 87%
  2. Bosch – 84%
  3. Samsung – 83%
  4. LG – 82%

Miele has taken out the Best Brand washing machine prize for six years in a row, sharing the top spot with LG in 2019.

…but don't buy on brand alone

While the four brands above have well-founded reputations, here at CHOICE we know that buying based on brand alone is sometimes a recipe for disappointment: even the best brand sometimes delivers duds.

And focusing solely on one brand in your search for the perfect appliance can mean you overlook other products offering comparable performance for a much smaller price tag.

Machines from the same brand can vary widely in terms of performance, features, capacity, energy efficiency, and more, so don't assume that all products from a reputable manufacturer will give you what you want.

The best thing to do is to focus on individual models by checking CHOICE reviews to find the best washing machines before you buy.

These washers topped our tests and are all recommended by our experts, which means they deliver very good overall performance and, most importantly, get your clothes clean.

bosch wga244u0au

Bosch WGA244U0AU

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 83%
  • Price: $1299
  • Capacity: 9kg

Bosch is one of the front-runners in our Best Brand recommendations, and this $1299 model is the pick of the sub-$1500 bunch.

It's energy efficient, lets you add items after the cycle has started (a feature sometimes lacking in front loaders), and the Bosch brand has one of the highest reliability ratings of all washing machine brands we've surveyed.

Bosch machines consistently punch above their weight in performance vs price and this model is no exception

Ashley Iredale, CHOICE whitegoods expert

"But it's not just brand reliability: Bosch washing machines consistently punch above their weight in the performance vs price equation and this 9kg model is no exception," says Ashley.

The only downside to this machine is that it has a very long cycle time of 222 minutes, but with such good performance at such a low price, it's a great buy.

lg wv10 1410w

LG WV10-1410W

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 82%
  • Price: $1499
  • Capacity: 10kg

This LG sits at the top of the price range for our cheaper options, but it does deliver great performance for the price. Its performance for dirt removal, water efficiency, rinse performance and spin efficiency were all on point.

And it comes with an added feature: a detergent auto dose, which gives you flexibility to either add detergent yourself or let the machine take care of it.

This LG delivers great performance for the price.

Unfortunately it does have a long cycle time of 195 minutes, and it's relatively expensive to run, so consider these factors if you're thinking of buying it.

samsung ww12tp04dsh

Samsung WW12TP04DSH

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 82%
  • Price: $1449
  • Capacity: 12kg

The largest machine in this list, the 12kg capacity Samsung WW12TP04DSH delivers great bang for your buck.

Even with its larger capacity, it's cheaper to run than all the smaller machines we've listed, uses a thrifty 46L of water for a load and has a far shorter cycle time of 159 minutes, shaving a whole hour off the Bosch's cycle time. (It's still not a short cycle by any means, but it's a whole lot quicker than the Bosch!)

Samsung has really delivered here, with the holy trinity of great performance, short cycle time, and huge capacity at a reasonable price

Ashley Iredale, CHOICE whitegoods expert

"Samsung has really delivered here, with the holy trinity of great performance, short cycle time, and huge capacity at a reasonable price – and its low running cost also means ongoing savings," says Ashley.

Aside from its cycle time, our experts' only criticism of it is that it lacks a hand-washable woollens wash, so you can only put machine-washable woollens in. Still, having to wash your jumpers in the sink is a small price to pay for such good performance.

samsung ww85t504dae

Samsung WW85T504DAE

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 82%
  • Price: $849
  • Capacity: 8.5kg

The cheapest of all the front loaders our experts recommend, this Samsung is a steal at just $849.

It ticks all the boxes for performance, being rated as 'excellent' or 'very good' for all metrics. Added cycle options like extra rinse and machine-washable woollens wash, plus the ability to add items after the cycle has started, make it a versatile model.

It is relatively noisy, however, and has a long cycle time, so if you're a noise-sensitive person who's short on time, this might not be the machine for you.

samsung ww85t554daw door

The Samsung WW85T554DAW's Addwash feature allows you to put laundry into the machine after the cycle has started.

Samsung WW85T554DAW

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 82%
  • Price: $949
  • Capacity: 8.5kg

This machine is virtually identical to the one above, except that it has an Addwash feature – a hatch in the door that allows you to put items in after the cycle has started.

For the WW85T504DAE, you'll need to stop the machine to add washing.

This machine has an Addwash feature – a hatch in the door that allows you to put items in after the cycle has started

This feature will cost an extra $100 (unless you find this model on sale), so you'll need to decide whether it's worth it. If you're a forgetful washer, or you have kids who always need to add clothes in at the last minute, it's a useful feature to have.

The best of the rest

These machines didn't quite make the cut-off to be recommended by CHOICE experts, but they still scored well and are worth considering.

The models marked with an asterisk (*) didn't score well on gentleness, with our experts rating them between 53% and 56% on this metric. (The Samsung WW12BB944DGBSA scored just 48%.)

While they did perform well on our other tests, gentleness is worth considering as it can affect the life of your clothes.
