In Australia, many people depend on personal vehicles for day-to-day transport. It is essential that we get the market settings right for vehicles, including electric vehicles, so Australians are empowered to make purchasing decisions that match their needs.

CHOICE has written a policy submission to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water in response to the Department's call for feedback on the National Electric Vehicle Strategy.

Australia is one of the only major economies without vehicle fuel efficiency standards in place or under development. This has led to Australia becoming a dumping ground for inefficient, high-polluting cars and less choice for consumers as electric vehicle manufacturers prioritise other countries.

CHOICE recommends that the Federal Government should introduce strong mandatory fuel-efficiency standards to create the right incentives for efficient cars to be made available to Australian consumers.

There is strong consumer interest in the electric vehicle market, but a number of barriers remain.
