There are several different types of carpet stain remover. The most common is spray, then foam spray, which exits the bottle as foam but dries to a powder and needs to be vacuumed. There are also a couple that have their own applicator brush, and then powder which is sprinkled over carpet and vacuumed up.

CHOICE Expert RatingView tooltip
To determine the CHOICE Expert Rating, our overall score, we soil carpet with red wine, coffee, sauce, oil/dirt and foundation. Reflectance readings are taken of the soiled carpet stains. We follow the directions for applying the product and the amount of time they're left on the stain. The time differs depending on the manufacturer recommendation. Once the product is removed, the reflectance readings are taken and the percentage soil removal is calculated. We do 4 repeats of each stain, or 20 carpet tiles for each product.

Test methodView tooltip
  • We soil light-coloured carpet with red wine, sauce, coffee, oil/dirt and foundation. The stains are left to dry over a number of days and the carpet is cut into 10cm x 10cm squares. The reflectance values of the stained tiles are taken before and after cleaning to determine the soil removal percentage. We used two methods of cleaning, according to the instructions on each pack (we replicate the test a minimum of four times).
  • METHOD 1: 5mL of product is applied to the centre of the carpet square and left for a set amount of time. A damp cloth is then used to massage the product into the carpet for 30 seconds in a clockwise circular direction, and the carpet tile is then left to dry.
  • METHOD 2: 5g of product is applied to the centre of the carpet square and the carpet square is left for a set time and brushed in for 30 seconds.

Method of applicationView tooltip
These are the instructions for application.

Carpet deodoriser: Spray a fine mist over the carpet and allow to dry. Spray directly onto the odour-causing area to kill bacteria. A regular spray into the corners of a room will provide adequate odour control for extended periods. Carpet spotter: Spray the soiled area, taking care not to overwet the carpet. Allow 2 minutes of contact time. Blot with a clean, colourfast, absorbent cloth, working from the edge of the stain to the centre. Repeat the process if necessary.

Vacuum clean the carpet. Shake the bag thoroughly to maximise product coverage. Turn the bag upside down and pull off both sealing strips from the bottom. Hold the bag by the handle and shake to distribute the powder evenly across the carpet. Work in the powder with a brush and allow it to completely dry (approximately 20 minutes). Completely vacuum up the dried powder.

For spots and stains: Spray liberally over affected area and leave for several minutes. Using a light blotting action, with a damp clean white cloth or sponge, work from the outside of the stain towards the centre. Rinse cloth in cold clean water and repeat until stain is removed. For complete carpet cleaning: Spray lightly and evenly over carpet area. Wipe lightly with damp clean white cloth or sponge. Rinse cloth in clean cold water and repeat until carpet area is covered. Test for colour fastness prior to usage.

Heavy stains may require second application. For complete carpet cleaning: Spray lightly and evenly over carpet area. Wipe lightly with cleaning cloth or sponge. Rinse cloth in cold clean water and repeat until carpet area is covered.

Adequately ventilate. Shake can well. Hold can upside down, 15cm above stain. Spray stain lightly - do not oversaturate. When sprayed area dries and turns white, vacuum entire area in both directions using narrow nozzle. Repeat after 24 hours for stubborn stains.

Before you clean, blot up wet stains with a clean cloth. Test a small hidden area for colourfastness and examine when dry. Turn nozzle to spray position and generously spray evenly over soiled area. Turn nozzle to stream position for heavier soils. Wait 3-5 minutes. Gently blot area with clean, damp, colour-safe cloth. Rinse cloth and repeat as needed. Allow carpet to dry thoroughly.

First time use: Twist off the brush head, do not remove seal, pierce a small hole in the seal about 2mm in diameter. Screw the brush head on again, taking care not to over tighten. Remove loose dirt, blot up spills from stained area and squeeze bottle gently to moisten applicator brush. Apply by holding the bottle so the applicator is flat against the soiled area - do not soak, let the formulation do the work. Leave for 3 minutes and then with a damp white cloth, gently remove all residues of the stain and solution. Heavy soiling may need second application. Rinse applicator after every use.

For general carpet cleaning: Vacuum thoroughly to remove loose dirt. Shake can well. Hold can upside down 80cm from area. Press button completely down to spray an even, thin layer on the area to be cleaned. Using a soft, damp and clean cloth or sponge, gently spread foam into area using straight strokes in various directions (not in a circular motion). Continue to work into area until clean. Allow area to settle for 1-2 hours or until dry. For heavily soiled area, repeated application may be necessary. Vacuum thoroughly to remove dried foam and loosened dirt as necessary.

First, mop up the excess moisture as quickly as you can. The quicker you can attend to a mess, the better chance you have of getting it out! If you have some soda water on hand, dampen a cloth well and apply to the stain and sponge it up. If it is still there, make up the following mixture: 2 tablespoons dishwashing liquid, 3 tablespoons white vinegar, 1/4 cup water. Work the liquid into the stain and blot it dry with a clean towel.
