What is the CHOICE Expert Rating?

CHOICE Expert Rating

This is the product's overall performance score, based on key tests conducted by our industry experts in the CHOICE labs.

Good points

• Passes key safety requirements.
• Claims compliance to the latest European playpen standard.
• Has a gate, so there's no need to lift the child over the sides, and the gate latch is easy to operate with one hand.
• No tool is needed to assemble or disassemble.
• Multiple configurations (eg safety barrier, but the parts for wall mounting are not included).
• Keeps its form (rectangular shape) well.
• Has a play mat.

Bad points

• Minor safety failure: The lock does not engage automatically when the gate is closed. BabyDan says its playpen meets the latest European standards (which do not require an automatic locking mechanism) and disagrees with our assessment, saying it believes "a manual locking mechanism enables the parent to ensure correct operation whereas an automatic locking mechanism can provide a false sense of security, if the locking operation does not work correctly every time".
• Some effort needed to connect/disconnect; need to avoid pinch points.
• Feels heavy.

Products we've recommended have passed all our safety and durability tests. We sometimes find that no products pass all our safety tests, so that we can't recommend any, but usually find some models with only minor failures that are still worth considering.

Passed key safety requirements View more details.

Models that pass key safety requirements have no serious issues. Ones that score around 60-65% for performance may have minor hazards such as a door that doesn't self-close or edges/projections that could injure if a child runs into them. Serious failures include detachable small parts, snagging/strangulation hazards, climbing footholds or failure of the limb or head entrapment requirements of both Australian cot and European playpen standards.

A gate is handy to avoid bending over to take your child out. Unsafe playpens don't have sufficiently childproof gates.
