Which mayonnaise is best?: CHOICE

Aldi and Woolworths home brand products take top spot.

CHOICE has blind taste-tested 29 mayonnaises from major supermarkets, including Woolworths, Coles, and Aldi, and brands such as Heinz, Praise, Kewpie, and Hellmann’s, to help you choose which one you should add to your basket.

“Mayonnaise is a key ingredient in many recipes. Whether you’re making a coleslaw, devilled eggs or simply adding some to your chicken schnitzel roll, having a good-quality mayo is key to enjoying a delicious meal,” says CHOICE Editorial Director, Mark Serrels.

“Aldi Colway Real Mayonnaise and Woolworths Whole Egg Mayonnaise both took top spot in our tests, receiving a score of 80%. If you’re looking for a tasty mayo and a budget friendly option, search no further! Both these products cost under 65 cents per 100g,” says Serrels.

CHOICE experts blind taste-tested each mayonnaise, and assessed them on appearance, aroma, texture and flavour. We recommend mayonnaise with a CHOICE Expert Rating of 75% or more.

The best tasting mayonnaise:

1. Aldi Colway Real Mayonnaise

CHOICE Expert Rating: 80%

Price per 100g: $0.61

“Our experts praised this mayonnaise for its creamy smooth texture and whole-egg flavour. They also liked its mild, pleasant aroma with a slight mustard note,” says Serrels.

1. Woolworths Whole Egg Mayonnaise

CHOICE Expert Rating: 80%

Price per 100g: $0.64

“The Woolworths home brand mayonnaise had a creamy, good-coloured appearance with a soft smooth texture. Our experts also noted its balanced flavor with both sweetness and a pleasant vinegar acidity,” says Serrels.

2. Aldi Colway Authentic Mayonnaise

CHOICE Expert Rating: 77%

Price per 100g: $0.78

“Our experts enjoyed the balance of flavours of this Aldi mayonnaise with hints of mustard, vinegar and fat, plus some salty and sweet notes,” says Serrels.

“Across our taste test there was one product we recommend you steer clear of – the Coles 97% Fat Free Mayonnaise. It received a poor score of 47%, making it the lowest rated mayonnaise in our testing. Our experts noted it had a translucent appearance with a gummy, glue-like consistency and an unbalanced flavour. We advise skipping this mayo during your next grocery shop,” says Serrels.
