Finding the right toilet paper can be a tricky task – do you choose double length or triple? Two ply or three? Recycled or bamboo?
Luckily, CHOICE has reviewed 42 products from Quilton, Kleenex, Sorbent, Woolworths, Coles and more to determine which toilet paper you should add to your trolley and which ones to dump.
“Toilet paper comes in so many varieties these days it can be overwhelming to know which one is best. At CHOICE, we test toilet paper across four key areas to determine which products offer the best quality. We test for softness, disintegration time, how easily it tears and resistance to puncturing,” says CHOICE Senior Project Officer, Chris Barnes.
For a toilet roll to be recommended by our experts, it needs a CHOICE Expert Rating of at least 70%, plus scores of 65% or higher across all four tests.
The best recommended toilet paper:

1. Quilton 4 Ply Softness Gold
CHOICE Expert Rating: 78%
Price per 100 sheets: $0.69

2. Quilton Shea Butter in Gold 4 Ply
CHOICE Expert Rating: 77%
Price per 100 sheets: $0.69

2. Vevelle (Woolworths) Luxury Soft Double Length
CHOICE Expert Rating: 77%
Price per 100 sheets: $0.29
The worst toilet paper:

1. Kleenex Complete Clean Double Length
CHOICE Expert Rating: 53%
Price per 100 sheets: $0.52

“If you’re looking for a budget buy that also performed well in our tests, we recommended either Coles So Soft & Strong 3 Ply Embossed White Double Length or Vevelle White Toilet Tissue 1 Ply, both scoring 78%. As we always say at CHOICE, price doesn’t always equal performance – and these supermarket brand products will be gentle on both your wallet and your bum,” says Barnes.
