Senior management

The day-to-day management of CHOICE is handled by the CEO and the senior management team.

  • Alan Kirkland

    Alan Kirkland CEO

    Alan Kirkland has been stirring up trouble since he was a teenager. His career before joining CHOICE in 2012 involved campaigning on issues as diverse as education funding, homelessness and public transport. He has also worked on the other side of the fence, in government. As CEO of Legal Aid NSW during the global financial crisis, Alan saw the human impact of poor lending practices, which sparked his passion for consumer rights.

    These days, Alan sees his job as making sure that CHOICE stays relevant to the needs of Australia's consumers, all while having a little fun along the way.

  • Stacy Gershberg

    Stacy Gershberg Director, People & Culture

    Stacy joined CHOICE in May 2019 and heads up the People & Culture team. Stacy has 15 years experience as a Senior HR practitioner with complementary experience in operational management up to a senior level. She is passionate about building coaching cultures that support business growth through people.

    Stacy has led the people strategy across a range of industries including community, retail, membership, engineering, construction and government. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Sociology and a Diploma in Human Resource Management.

  • Margaret Rafferty

    Margaret Rafferty Managing Editor

    Margaret has been creating content for Australian audiences for more than 20 years. Across the course of her career she has written for digital and print audiences on a range of subjects from modern car safety to the benefits of meditation and almost everything in-between.

    After spending the bulk of her career in commercial media she joined CHOICE as a content editor in 2018, drawn by the organisation's purpose and a belief in the need to protect the rights of consumers.

    Margaret leads the editorial and investigations team which, as well as producing CHOICE magazine each month, also creates in-depth investigative content.

  • Erin Turner

    Erin Turner Director, Campaigns & Communications

    Erin became a CHOICE director in 2017. She leads CHOICE's Campaigns and Communications Department which fights to keep industry and government accountable and achieve real change for Australian consumers. 

    Erin joined CHOICE in 2014, initially with a focus on finance policy and campaigns. Erin previously worked in government relations, policy and campaigns roles for non-government organisations, including CBAA, the peak body for community radio stations, and the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN). 

    Erin has a Master of Politics and Public Policy and a Bachelor of Arts. She is a board member of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) and a member of the Financial Rights Legal Centre Management Committee.

  • Ian Morgan

    Ian Morgan Director, Growth & Experience

    Ian's job is to make sure our digital products and services continue to evolve and deliver the best experience and help as many Australian consumers as possible. He is also responsible for our membership program and the development and delivery of CHOICE's strategy.

    Ian arrived at CHOICE in 2011 after a 10-year career in magazine publishing in London. He started out as a picture editor and finished as editor, having done just about every editorial role in between while covering local government, health, fashion and travel. For a short time he was also an air traffic controller and a bookseller. 

    Ian has a joint honours in History and Politics from Keele University and is currently studying a Masters in Business Administration at Macquarie Graduate School of Management.

  • Matthew Steen

    Matthew Steen Director, Reviews & Testing

    Matthew leads the services, testing labs, content, and facilities support teams, which produce all reviews and testing for CHOICE and also the Test Research development areas. 

    Originally joining CHOICE in 2003 as a consumer services employee, Matthew had previously worked for 12 years in information, communications and technology around the world for various corporate sectors, including banking, accounting and computer hardware manufacturers.

  • Tristan Ye

    Tristan Ye Director, Commercial & Finance

    Tristan, a CPA, has an M Comm in Professional Accounting from UNSW. Tristan was appointed as the Director of Commercial and Finance in 2018. He leads the transformation and elevation of CHOICE's Finance function to support the organisation's rapid growth trajectory. He also leads the commercial partnerships with organisations and brands who are passionate about delivering expert, unbiased consumer information that consumers can trust.

    Before joining CHOICE, Tristan spent 10 years working for a number of leading Australian and British publishing brands, including News.com.au, Woolworths Fresh Magazine, Sunday Style Magazine, Weatherzone.com.au and Dailymail.co.uk.

  • William Walker

    William Walker Chief Data and Technology Officer

    William joined CHOICE in 2018 and provides strategic technology oversight and governance across all technology areas within the organisation. He has a strong background in IT management with a 10-year career spanning a variety of organisations including a long period with globally distributed multinationals. He has a broad technology background, having led teams across many technology disciplines including software development, IT services, infrastructure and cloud platforms, systems integration and data analytics.

    William holds a Masters in Business and Technology from the University of Technology in Sydney and continues close ties with the University in the areas of student development and industry relationships.
