A freestanding oven is a combination of oven and cooktop. We lab test and review dual fuel ranges and fully electric ovens to help you decide which brand and model is right for you.

If you do a lot of entertaining or have a large family to cook for, a 90cm model will be a good option, but if you have less space to play with or just don't need such a big oven and cooktop, then a 60cm model may be a better choice.

Our lab results will tell you which freestanding ovens:

  • are the best overall performers
  • perform well in a range of oven and cooktop performance tests
  • are easiest to use
  • are easiest to clean

We also note important features such as grills, child locks, internal and external dimensions and construction materials.

Some models shown in this review are from previous tests and are no longer available in stores. We've kept these test results available for people who may be shopping for a second hand oven. To view discontinued models, select 'Discontinued' under the 'Related products' criteria.

We assess how well the cooktops can cook a white sauce (and melt chocolate for electric cooktops) on low heat setting, their control responsiveness and turn-town ability by cooking rice using the absorption method, and their high heat setting with a vegetable and beef stir fry.

Oven ease of use

Expand to view more details.

Each oven is assessed by comparing the ease of use of the controls, their location, clarity of the labels, using and cleaning the grill as well as the interior and exterior surfaces of the oven.

Features

Self cleaning surfaces (catalytic liners)

Expand to view more details.

Often referred to as 'self-cleaning' surfaces, catalytic liners work by absorbing fat splatters. You need to regularly heat the oven to 250°C for an hour to burn off the splatters and wipe them with a damp cloth when cool.
