10 digital radios on test, priced from $170 to $1000

In 2009, CHOICE tested a selection of the latest digital radios and concluded they were not really good value if you just wanted to listen to digital radio. We considered testing more affordable digital radios, but the prices being asked for even the most basic models were still ridiculously high compared to similarly featured AM/FM radios. Instead, we've included models with some added versatility that at least partially justifies their exorbitant price tags.

If you have a broadband internet connection with wireless networking you can use any of these radios to listen to one of thousands of internet radio stations, as well as listen to your music collection stored on your home network PC or hard drive using Wi-Fi or using an ethernet cable on some of the models. All the models on test can tune into FM stations, however none support analog AM radio.

Through our rigorous testing we reveal which digital radios:

  • Have the best sound quality.
  • Deliver the best digital reception.
  • Are the easiest to use.
  • Use the least energy on standby.
