01.Introduction

Cooking omelet in frypan iStock

We tested 14 non-stick frypans, from $23 to $231.

Because less oil is used, a non-stick frypan allows for healthier cooking and easier cleaning. Its effectiveness and longevity ultimately comes down to the way it’s used. A good non-stick frypan is one where a fried egg will slide out straight onto your plate when you tilt the pan, and distributes heat evenly to give you a perfectly browned pancake. The key to getting this result consistently is looking after the surface - keep in mind, non-stick cookware cannot be used the same way as stainless steel pans.

CHOICE tested 14 non-stick frypans, ranging from $23 to $231 and from 26cm-30cm. We assessed their:

  • non-stick surface
  • heat distribution
  • durability
  • ease of use

When it comes to durability, our vigorous scratch test divided the frypans in half. Generally, frypans in the top half of the table performed very well for durability; while the coating had a polished effect, it wasn’t scratched to the extent that bare metal was exposed. By contrast, most frypans in the bottom half of the table are poor or very poor for durability. The Raco frypan is the standout performer for ease of use.

In most cases, a higher price tag is an indicator of performance. A reasonably priced frypan made our recommended list and, by contrast, a more expensive model came in at the bottom of our table.
