Recommended View more details.

We recommended all models with a score of 70% or more overall as long as the MFP or printer also delivers performance scores of more than 70% for print quality.

CHOICE Expert Rating View more details.
  • Overall score for MFPs is made up of print quality (43%), overall ease of use (18%), print speed (11%), scanning (9%), copying (9%), ink wastage (5%) and networking features (5%).
  • Overall score for standard printers is made up of print quality (54%), ease of use (23%), print speed (13%), ink wastage (5%) and networking features (5%).
Printing quality score View more details.

Inkjet printing quality is assessed by a panel of experts looking at a typical black-and-white letter (25%), an 8x10-inch high quality photo (20%), a colour spreadsheet (25%) and a colour document with a mixture of graphics and text (20%). This is representative of the most common printing habits. Moisture resistance is also measured (5%) by seeing if text smears when using a highlighter pen on it and if ink would run or bleed by dripping water on a day-old photo print.

Laser printing quality is assessed by a panel of experts looking at a typical black-and-white letter (31.25%), a colour spreadsheet (31.25%) and a colour document with a mixture of graphics and text (31.25%). This is representative of the most common printing habits. Moisture resistance is also measured (6.25%)

Printing speed score View more details.

Inkjet printing speed is assessed by measuring the speed to print the same documents, made up of 25% for the photo, 25% for the colour document, and 25% each for the letter and the spreadsheet.

Laser printing speed is assessed by splitting assessments into equal thirds, and measuring the speed to print a colour document (33.33%), a letter (33.33%) and a spreadsheet (33.33%).

Scanning score View more details.

Scanning and copying are assessed by scanning and copying a magazine page, an 8x10-inch colour photo and scanning a 3D object.

Scanning and copying are assessed by scanning and copying a magazine page, an 8x10-inch colour photo and scanning a 3D object.

Ease of use score View more details.

Ease of use is assessed by a team of experts running each product through everyday scenarios that replicate typical use.

Networking score View more details.

We set up wired and wireless connections; assess the steps required and the adequacy of the instructions.

Ink wastage score View more details.

We consider the impact of the 'maintenance cycle' in Inkjet models, which consumes ink when print-heads are automatically cleaned. Less ink used equals reduced expense. We use our 'average use scenario' (1000 mono prints, 250 colour document prints and 250 full-colour photo prints over the course of a year).

Power consumption score View more details.

Power consumption is a small factor in overall cost, so we don't add it to the total, but it's included in the reports.

Excess ink usage for cleaning etc View more details.

Inkjet printers that are only used infrequently run a "maintenance cycle" to clean the print-heads before use. We calculate how much is used over a three-week period. We can't accurately calculate how much ink is tank type printers use for cleaning so they don't get a score in this test.

The time it takes from powering on to starting printing the first page, measured in seconds.

Brand reliability score View more details.

These are taken straight from our brand reliability survey, but do not add to the overall score. These scores refer to the brand only, not that particular model. Differences of 4% or more are significant. Reliability figures are based on owner assessment, not test data. We use the data we collect from members to rate the most popular brands for reliability. We take into account the age of the products so we can compare fairly between brands.

Toner life is determined by running the printers almost continuously, printing as many text, spreadsheet and photo pages as possible from three sets of cartridges. This information is used to calculate cost per page and long-term running costs (based on our average use scenario of 1000 mono prints, 250 colour document prints and 250 full-colour photo prints over the course of a year).

Claimed printing speed colour (ppm) View more details.

The maximum print output speed of the printer's engine, in pages per minute (ppm). Look for this on the packaging, but don't make a purchase decision solely on this figure as there's no standard for measuring print speed and actual output speed can vary greatly. It can take four times as long to print a colour page as a black-only page as the internal print drum in laser has to revolve four times, once for each colour. Also note that figures quoted on marketing materials or packaging are often for the same page printed multiple times, not including the time it takes to print the first copy, which also includes the time it takes to process the digital file.
