01.Time is right for a Supermarket Ombudsman
The supermarket ‘price war’ that began with generic milk is continuing to stir debate, with the Senate Inquiry into the issue reporting on 20 April .
CHOICE has joined forces with the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) to make an additional submission to the inquiry, proposing options for establishing a Supermarket Ombudsman. We believe the Ombudsman would provide much needed leadership in reforming the supermarket industry, benefiting consumers and the wider industry.
While CHOICE and AFGC sometimes feature on different sides of policy debates, we are agreed on the need to address the perceived lack of competition in the packaged food and grocery market, where two players control up to 80 per cent.
Read the joint CHOICE and AFGC submission to the Senate’s inquiry into the impacts of discounted milk prices, and see our joint media release.
