We’ve tested ALDI's latest vacuum cleaner, the "multi-cyclonic" 2000W Lumina Signature 3019 VC-460, available from 28 July.

ALDI sells a variety of household appliances but most aren’t kept in stock for more than a few weeks – some even sell out in a few days – so we’ve arranged with ALDI to get an occasional early sample for review before the product arrives in store.

We put the Lumina Signature through our usual vacuum cleaner tests to see how well it cleans carpet, removes pet hair and cleans corners and edges, as well as how easy it is to use.

Performance

It’s OK for removing dirt from carpet and for cleaning edges and corners – certainly not the best we’ve seen, but far from the worst. See our test scores.

However it’s excellent at picking up pet hair, even though it hasn’t got a power or turbo head, just a standard carpet/hard floor head. The head swivels easily and moves easily over carpet and under low furniture. For noise, the vacuum cleaner measured 73dB; that’s noisy but similar to most of the models we test, though this one also has an irritating high-pitched whistle.

Ease of use

There’s on-board storage for the supplied tools (crevice and upholstery tools and a dusting brush) and excellent reach from a power point (10.5m). The power switch is located on the vacuum body and is easy to operate with your foot. On the down side, the hose feels a bit flimsy and crimps easily.

It’s bagless, so you will save on buying replacement bags, though as usual emptying the dustbin can be messy. The VC-460 has a HEPA filter, but the filter is fiddly to remove and messy to clean.

Scores

  • Overall 73%
  • Dirt removal from carpet 63%
  • Ease of use 80%
  • Cleaning corners/ edges  69%
  • Pet hair removal 90%

CHOICE verdict

Overall, the ALDI Lumina Signature 3019 VC-460 is a good vacuum cleaner at a great price. At $100, it compares favourably with some models that cost hundreds of dollars more (see our tests of low-cost and mid-priced vacuum cleaners for examples). We’ll include it alongside the other models in our next vacuum cleaner test, due online in September, so you can compare it with them.
