01.Coles embraces olive oil standard
Coles has announced that its private label olive oils will meet the Australian Standard for olive oils by the end of 2012.
CHOICE worked with industry stakeholders in the development of the standard which was finalised in 2011. The standard aims to provide consumer protection by defining different grades of oil, including extra virgin, and detailing the testing methods which can be used to ensure that products for sale are what they claimed to be on the label.
Importantly, the standard restricts the use of words like pure, light and premium that provide little assistance to consumers wanting to make informed decisions about which oil to purchase.
CHOICE hopes Coles’ action on this issue will encourage other retailers and manufacturers who haven’t adopted the standard to do so.
In other olive oil news, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has launched a buying guide with information about olive oil categories and different product grades. It is available on the ACCC’s website.
