The Australasian New Car Assessment Program's (ANCAP) latest test results on 42 vehicles across a range of categories indicate safety isn't compromised in low fuel consumption cars. However, at the other end of the safety rating scale, results show that low-cost imported utes score poorly for safety.

Fuel is the most frequent car expense, so to save money and help out our environment you'll be pleased with the latest results released from ANCAP, which show that low fuel consumption cars achieve among the highest safety ratings. Over their life these vehicles also save the environment up to 20 tonnes in greenhouse gases.

New car crash testing is carried out in Australia, the US, Japan and Europe, and simulates different crash scenarios. Most new cars rate well, however a few like Great Wall Motors and Proton do not protect their occupants well in the event of a severe crash. The four tests carried out to give the occupant protection score are:

      • Frontal offset crash
      • Side impact crash
      • Pole test
      • Advanced seatbelt warning system
