Behind the hype

Marketing claims on the packaging fall just short of being able to unload your dishwasher for you. In this trial we’ve come across claims such as Max-in-1 (with 11 actions), All-in-1 10 power actions, 8-in-1, 5-in-1, and 4-in-1. These claims refer to the number of performance actions or ingredients included in the product, such as enzymes to break down food scraps. But in most cases it’s simply stating the inclusion of any or all typical dishwasher detergent ingredients. It doesn’t always mean you get anything extra compared with another detergent that isn’t making any x-in-one claim. For example, almost all detergents on trial have enzymes, but not all list explicit claims.
