In hot humid summers and cold wet winters, a dehumidifier can help fix a damp dwelling. We lab test and review dehumidifiers to help you find the best one for your home.

Most dehumidifiers can perform well enough in hot humid conditions, but our rigorous testing sorts out which ones operate best in challenging cold conditions. We measure their real water removal rate and how much they'll cost you to run.

We've also partnered with Shop Ethical on this update to show the ratings that the Ethical Consumer Group gives to each company.

We review both main types of dehumidifier: refrigeration and desiccant. Our review will help you decide:

  • what to buy
  • which dehumidifiers are best at removing water
  • which are the most energy-efficient
  • which are the easiest to use.

Shopping links on the CHOICE website

CHOICE is an independent, nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping consumers. Clicking a link will take you to a retailer's website to shop. While we make money if you buy through some retailer links, this doesn't influence any of our rankings. 100% of the money we make goes straight back into our nonprofit mission. We're currently testing this service and will consider providing more shopping links in the future. Tell us what you think.

Desiccant models use a disc or belt of moisture-absorbing material to dry the air. Refrigeration models use refrigeration coils, similar to a fridge or air conditioner, to cool the air and condense the moisture out. See our buying guide for more information on these and thermo-electric models.
