01.Introduction
Over the past few years, Apple has sold more than 50 million iPods worldwide a year. That's a lot of music in people’s pockets, but what do you do when you want to share your songs at home?
CHOICE tested 11 mini and midi hi-fi systems with iPod docks, and overall, we're impressed with the sound quality some of these relatively cheap and compact products can produce. For those who don't have an iPod, most will also let you play your music using another type of MP3 player.
For more information on home stereos and portable music players, see our Sound section.

How we test
Sound
quality Our expert panellists listen to a selection of six different types of music. They score each system for bass, mid-tone and treble response, ease of listening and clarity.
Ease of use Our tester, James Thomson, scores each system’s instruction manual, ease of setting up, remote control, on-board controls and display.
Standby energy consumption James uses a regulated power supply and calibrated power meter to measure the energy consumed by the stereo when in standby. (to learn more about energy efficiency around the house see CHOICE's dedicated saving energy section).
