  • IVF In an IVF cycle, a woman takes fertility drugs to stimulate egg production. Once the eggs are mature, the doctor collects them. The man produces a sperm sample and the eggs are fertilised. After embryos have developed, they’re transferred into the woman’s uterus. Most patients who become pregnant do so during the first three cycles. See our report on assisted conception.
  • Embryo freezing If there are remaining embryos of suitable quality, they’re frozen for future use. Thaw survival rates vary.
  • Blastocyst transfer Some clinics and doctors transfer the embryo on day 2 or day 3 after fertilisation, when it consists usually of up to 12 cells, others wait until day five, when it usually consists of more than 100 cells and is called a blastocyst. Blastocyst transfers usually have a higher success rate than day 2/3 transfers, but not all embryos will develop into blastocysts in the laboratory, so the number of embryos you have available for transfer and freezing will be lower.
  • Medicare Safety Net After you or your family have paid $610.70 (concession cardholders /families
eligible for Family Tax Benefit (A)) or $1221.90 in out-of pocket costs, Medicare will pay 80% of the out-of-pocket costs or up to the cap for out-of-hospital costs.
