Ask the Expert

Daniel Graham

Q: My credit card comes with complimentary international travel insurance. Should I rely on the free cover, or should I take out a standalone policy before my trip?

A: Some credit card travel policies can be as good as standalone insurance products, although they do come with some special conditions. For example, you usually have to buy your return tickets on the card before the insurance is activated. And there are often lower excess costs for the standalone insurance, so what you save on premiums with the free insurance you might end up paying in excess if you make a claim.

As always, you should familiarise yourself with the PDS with any products you're looking at so you know what they're actually selling you.

"I've been reading with interest about consumer rights under the new Australian Consumer Law. Then an article in CHOICE gave me the confidence to test out the ACL's provisions on how long one can reasonably expect products to last..."
