Q: I always thought a muesli bar was quite a healthy snack for when I was hungry at work. Surely something with seeds and nuts is better than a lot of other options out there?

A: Seeds and nuts are certainly nutritious, but many cereal, muesli, nut and seed bars are loaded with saturated fat and sugars, and their associated kilojoules. And the portion size of any food you eat is important.

Ideally, snacks – particularly those of the sugary, fatty variety – should fill a hole without giving you too many extra kilojoules. One way to achieve this is to keep your snacks small – less than 600kJ is a good rule of thumb – and aim for the bulk of your energy (kilojoule) intake to come from nutritious foods such as fresh fruit and veggies.
