What is the CHOICE Expert Rating

CHOICE Expert rating

This is the product's overall performance score, based on key tests conducted by our industry experts in the CHOICE labs.

Good points

• Has a gate, so there's no need to lift the child over the sides.
• No tool is needed to assemble or disassemble.
• Can be reconfigured into other rectangular or square sizes.
• Has a toy panel.

Bad points

• Serious safety failures: 1. Laminated adhesive decors are supplied unattached and pose ingestion and inhalation hazards. 2. Numerous gaps and the upper part of gate posts have a potential to snag or catch onto a child's clothing and pose a strangulation hazard. 3. Gate is insufficiently childproof and lock does not engage automatically when closed. 4. Major finger, limb and head entrapment hazards at numerous points on and between panels (including gate and toy panel). 4. Potential footholds which could be used for climbing out of the enclosure. 5. Structural inadequacy as the panels can be separated by applying a vertical force quite easily.
• Minor issue: Too easy for a child to lift.
• Up to 16 individual pieces to put together.
• Feels heavy, large, tends not to keep its form well (easily misshaped) and some panels separate easily.

Products we've recommended have passed all our safety and durability tests. We sometimes find that no products pass all our safety tests, so that we can't recommend any, but usually find some models with only minor failures that are still worth considering.

Passed key safety requirements View more details.

Models that pass key safety requirements have no serious issues. Ones that score around 60-65% for performance may have minor hazards such as a door that doesn't self-close or edges/projections that could injure if a child runs into them. Serious failures include detachable small parts, snagging/strangulation hazards, clmbing footholds or failure of the limb or head entrapment requirements of both Australian cot and European playpen standards.
