The annual CHOICE reliability survey asks thousands of members about the dishwashers they own, what they think of them and how they've held up over time. More than 7100 members participated in our 2021 reliability survey. The information they provided gives us a really good indication of how various dishwasher brands stack up over time – something we can't test in our labs.

Use this article to find the most reliable dishwasher brands from our latest survey.

About the scores

Reliability

Reliability figures are based on owner assessment, not test data. We use the data we collect from members to rate the most popular brands for reliability. We take into account the age of the products so we can compare fairly between brands.

Owner satisfaction

We asked owners to tell us what they think of the products they own, rating them from excellent to terrible. We've used this information to give each brand an owner satisfaction rating so you can see what people who use the brand each day think of them.

Service

We all know things go wrong sometimes, and how the manufacturer responds and helps you with these issues can make all the difference to your experience and trust in the brand. For large appliances that you might be more likely to get repaired, we asked members about their experience with the manufacturers' service and support. We've given each manufacturer a service rating so that you know how well they support customers when they need it. We need enough feedback to report fairly so in some cases we can't report this for all brands, but we'll tell you where we can.

How we get the data

We calculate a brand's reliability score and owner rating based on our survey of 7100 CHOICE members, conducted in 2021.

Which dishwasher brands deliver on reliability and satisfaction?

We looked at an eight-year purchasing period to calculate reliability and satisfaction scores, from 2013–2020.

We found Miele owners complimented how quiet their dishwasher is and commented that it cleans well, while Miele also received the highest service score for their service and support.

Bosch owners also liked that their dishwasher cleans well in addition to being reliable. On top of being one of the most reliable dishwasher brands, Miele also received the highest satisfaction score from its owners, topping the list with an owner satisfaction score of 92%.

Fisher & Paykel had one of the lowest reliability scores, which is perhaps related to the fact that it had a relatively high proportion of drawer dishwashers in the sample and they are less reliable than other types of dishwashers.

Drawer dishwashers were more likely to have poor or uneven cleaning and broken racks/baskets than other dishwasher types. Over half of drawer dishwasher owners have had problems since purchasing it, which is significantly higher than other types.

Owners of a drawer dishwasher liked it being compact and easy to use, however, there were complaints that it doesn't clean or dry very well and that the interior is flimsy.

Common dishwasher problems

Of the respondents that have experienced problems with their dishwashers, the most common were related to poor or uneven cleaning (9%), poor drying performance (8%), and filling/draining water (7%). Almost one in five (18%) respondents said they contacted the brand for service support.

Other problems with dishwashers included broken racks or baskets (4%), the dishwasher stopping mid-cycle or not completing the cycle (3%), problems with dials or controls (3%), problems with the detergent dispenser (3%), or the dishwasher dying or ceasing to work altogether (3%).
