We ordered a Baby 1st Homestead cot
. The sample we received failed numerous safety tests including suffocation hazards from cot ends, a dropside that can become higher than the upper surface of the mattress (potential finger entrapment), and a dropside mechanism failure. The recommended mattress width also leaves too much of a gap between the side of the cot and the mattress (suffocation hazard).
After raising our concerns with the importer it told us a sample model had been accidentally shipped to us from the warehouse, which we think is unacceptable. This model is marked as "Homesread" (not "Homestead") on the box and has a September 2012 date of manufacture. The two remaining sample models have been accounted for.
The importer told us that new models (marked as "Homestead") have a correct name and mattress size label, amended cot width and mattress base, improved dropside mechanism and rounded corners. We have not tested the "correct" version and to avoid confusion we've left the "Homesread" model out of the table.
