225/60R17 car tyre reviews

We try out 11 225/60R17 tyres on the CHOICE test track, including models from Dunlop, Goodyear, Pirelli and more.

Last updated: 30th November 2012

The tyre size 225/60R17 (see How to read a tyre for what the numbers mean) is suitable for some versions of popular current and older-model small SUVs such as the Hyundai iX35, Kia Sportage (our test car), Nissan XTrail and Renault Koleos. It's also the size to use if you want to upgrade from the 16-inch wheels on your Ford Escape, Mitsubishi Outlander LS or Peugeot 4007.

Since only relatively few car models share this size, there's a higher price tag and a much more limited range of tyres available compared with other passenger car tyre sizes.

We tested 11 sets of tyres, priced from $214 to $339 per tyre.

Our review rates the tyres based on their:

  • braking performance
  • cornering performance and
  • rolling noise
