The most popular brand from the respondents was Weber (53%).
The most common faults people had were flame and igniter issues, uneven heat, and rust.
The most popular type of barbecue was gas (94%).

Reliability and satisfaction

For reliability and satisfaction we looked at an eight-year purchase period, 2013–2021.

Matador, Weber and Zeigler & Brown were more reliable than Jumbuck.
Weber received the highest owner satisfaction score.
Electric barbecues were the most reliable.

Warranty and your consumer rights

The stated manufacturer's warranty is one of the things you'll likely consider when purchasing an barbecue.

However, it's just as important to understand your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Your rights mean that you're entitled to a free repair, replacement or refund if your barbecue develops a major fault within the first few years.

Your rights still stand even if the manufacturer's warranty has expired and you didn't buy an extended warranty.

How did CHOICE get these results?

In 2021 we surveyed more than 7000 people. We asked them about the performance and reliability of their barbecues over the past 12 months. We then cut the data down by selecting barbecues between 0–8 years old with a sample size of more than 50 people per brand, so we're more confident that our results match real-world experiences. Results were age standardised.

What does age standardised mean?

In our survey we asked people about their experience over the past 12 months with a barbecues aged between 0–8 years old. To make sure the results aren't skewed by brands that may have recently come on the market, or who aren't making barbecues anymore, we weigh results to an average distribution across the eight years. That means brands are compared more evenly.

How can I use this information?

This information tells you whether a brand is well regarded by people surveyed about customer satisfaction and reliability. Alongside our expert test results, this data can help you choose the best barbecue for your needs.

What does sample size mean?

The number of individual responses we received about a certain brand. For statistical accuracy we only included brands that had more than 50 responses.
