Our overall score is made up of 70% sole wear and 30% grip score. We round to the nearest 5% due to tolerance levels.

We use our treadmill lined with emery paper and a running shoe rig to do an accelerated wear on each shoe. Each shoe is tested for 12 hours, for a total of 120km. The loss of sole is measured and compared against its original weight.

We apply a 5kg weight to the shoe and measure the force required to move it across a wet concrete surface (70%) and a wet tile surface (30%).

A running shoe model is eligible for a CHOICE Recommended if it gets over 70% overall score and at least 60% for sole endurance and grip scores.

All of the shoes in the test had differences in weight between the left and right shoe. But minor discrepancies such as those found in our test make little to no difference for the majority of consumers.
