Travel insurance review

We review 29 brands of travel insurance. Included here are:

Take a look at How we review and Insurers reviewed for more information.

Please note: this information is now out of date but is still a useful guide to today's market. An updated comparison will be available here by November 2014.

Our findings

  • Differences in policy exclusions Many travel insurance policies exclude cover for specialised activities such as abseiling and skydiving, and less than half of the insurers surveyed include cover for insolvency of a travel provider such as a tour company or airline.
  • Premiums vary For example, there is a difference of more than $540 between the most and least expensive policies for an adult couple travelling to the USA for 35 days.
  • Some insurers provide automatic cover for some pre-existing medical conditions, while other conditions require medical assessment. Some insurers charge an application fee.

How we review

We collect information from insurers on their policy features and quotes, and score their cover for medical, accidental death, cancellation, travel delay, baggage, personal liability, adventure activities and affordability. We then give a weighting to each feature and calculate a total score out of 100. We compare the scores with the premium to find the best value policy.

The Best Buy scenarios are based on average travel times for each region according to outbound traveller surveys.

Regions are as follows:

  • APAC New Zealand, Bali, Fiji, Papua New Guinea
  • Asia India, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia
  • Europe UK, Ireland, Western Europe
  • World North America, South America, Japan, Africa

Comparison tables and recommended policies

Our comparison tables contain the premiums for each regional scenario in addition to the policy features for medical, cancellation, baggage, and travel delay
