Keeping your mobile phone or MP3 player charged when you’re travelling can be a hassle, especially when you’re in remote areas away from a convenient power point. The UNIROSS Emergency Two Way Charger offers a potential solution for the gadget-laden traveller. It uses two AA batteries (alkaline or rechargeable) to charge certain phones, PDAs, MP3 players and similar devices, and can also — as its “Two Way” name suggests — charge rechargeable AA batteries.

UNIROSS Emergency Two Way ChargerThe charger has a telescoping body (for storage) with a USB port. It comes with a connector cable and six connector heads — Nokia V1 and V2, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola and USB — and basic but adequate instructions. It has a three-year warranty.

The charger is very easy to use. You simply slide it open, put in the batteries and connect the cable to its USB port. To charge a phone or other device, you connect it to the other end of the cable using the appropriate connector head and set the “In/Out” switch to “out” so current flows out of the charger. The indicator light glows green to show the unit is charging the phone.

To charge AA batteries, you connect the charger via USB cable to a power source such as a computer, and set the switch to “in”. The indicator light glows red to show that the unit is charging the batteries. However, it doesn’t indicate when the batteries are fully charged, so you should follow the timing guide in the instructions to ensure you don’t overcharge the batteries. For example, it recommends 14 hours to charge two 2100 mAh Ni-MH batteries.

We used the charger to charge a completely flat battery in a Nokia 6680 phone, which would normally charge in up to two hours using a mains adaptor. It took 170 minutes using Uniross Hybrio (precharged) 2100 mAh rechargeable batteries and 210 minutes using Energizer MAX batteries. Charging the phone almost completely drained the Uniross batteries and completely drained the Energizers. We then used the charger to recharge the drained Uniross batteries (for 14 hours, as per the instructions), then used them to charge the phone again; this time it took 180 minutes.

CHOICE verdict

The UNIROSS Emergency Two Way Charger is a useful addition to your travel kit. With it, your phone, PDA, MP3 player and rechargeable AA batteries need never run out of juice.

Please note: this information was current as of September 2008 but is still a useful guide to today's market.
