01.Kingston Wi-Drive wireless media device
Price: $99 (16GB version)
The Kingston Wi-Drive is a portable storage drive allowing you to wirelessly access video, photos and ebooks from your Android or Apple mobile device or easily transfer the media directly to your mobile device. Owners of Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads or iPod Touches will appreciate the ability to either play files stored on the Wi-Drive or copy files to the mobile device without having to use iTunes. If you've moved your electronic life from a computer to a mobile device such as an Android tablet or Apple iPad, you'll soon realise that storage - or lack of it - is a major issue, particularly if you like watching video or have a large music collection.
On the go media
Similar in size to a smartphone, the Wi-Drive is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB configurations, with an internal battery delivering up to four hours of use. Getting files onto the Wi-Drive is a simple process: just connect the Wi-Drive to your computer (Mac or PC) using a USB cable and select the files to copy to the W-Drive. Once on the drive, you can either access the files from your mobile device using a wireless connection (802.11g/n) or copy the files to the mobile device to access when required.
The free Wi-Drive App from Apple’s App Store or the Google Play store (for Android mobile devices) allows you to manage your files using a simple menu layout showing the content stored either on the Wi-Drive or stored on your portable device. A dedicated app for Kindle Fire users is also available on the Amazon Appstore, allowing you to read ebooks stored either on the Kindle Fire or on the Wi-Drive.
Popular file formats such as MP4 and M4V (video), MP3 and WAV (music), JPG and TIF (images) and PDF files are supported directly, with additional format support dependent on the third-party app installed on your mobile device. For example, if you have the Kindle app installed on your Android or Apple iOS device, you can read a Kindle format ebook stored on the Wi-Drive by simply selecting the file and choosing "open with" on the Kindle app. If you want to view more exotic video file formats, you'll need to install an additional app such as VLC on your mobile device to access the file.
The Wi-Drive can also be used as a shared drive, making it a great solution for mobile devices with low on-board memory. Three devices can access the same video content which means video stored on the Wi-Drive can be watched by someone on an iPhone, iPad and Google Nexus 7 in the same room, or in the car to keep kids occupied on long trips.
Although designed to operate with Android or iOS devices, any computing device with a web browser and wireless connectivity can use the Wi-Drive to perform basic copying and file transfer tasks.
The Wi-Drive is a simple, effective tool to help mobile device owners expand their limited storage options as well as making it easier to copy content directly to the device without the need to go through a convoluted syncing process. While the official price for the 16GB drive is $99, a quick search on shopping comparison sites should get you the 64GB version for around the same price.
