LED light bulb reviews

We test 12 LED light bulbs (lamps) from brands including Philips, Osram and more.

Last updated: 11th December 2014

We review 12 LED light bulbs (or lamps, as they're technically called) of the type used in most household light fittings. Our latest test includes products with wattages from 9W to 14W.

This batch of lights was tested for 3500 hours – the equivalent of nearly two years' use, assuming five hours' use per day.

We're no longer testing compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). LED bulbs are becoming common in the market and their prices are coming down steadily – several in this test cost less than $20. While CFLs are cheaper, LEDs have the advantage in most respects: they switch on instantly, last a lot longer, are much less susceptible to failure due to rapid on-and-off switching and don't contain mercury. But LED bulbs with very high light output (1300 lumens, or 100W equivalent) are still rare.
