Toaster reviews

We test 15 toasters in the CHOICE labs, including models from Sunbeam, Breville, DeLonghi and more.

Last updated: 15th October 2015

When it comes to choosing a toaster, you'll need to look at capacity (two slices or four?), ease of use and design. But which ones actually make great toast? We asked you what you use your toaster for, and due to the popularity of multigrain bread, we now test multigrain bread in our toasters. (See our toaster survey for all the results.)

We review 15 toasters priced from $45 to $399. Our test tells you which ones:

  • are CHOICE buys
  • brown toast evenly and consistently; cycle after cycle
  • are good at browning multi-grain bread
  • are easiest to use.

(And yes, we got to eat the toast afterwards!)

We did test crumpets with these toasters due to popular demand, but most are only poor or borderline when it comes to toasting crumpets. For most toasters, you'll only get a good result by supervising the process closely to make sure they don't burn, or by putting them down for a second toasting. For more, see how we test toasters.
