Samsung's Shonky hat-trick

CHOICE airs the dirty laundry on Samsung’s $3000 washer/dryer that wastes your time, money and water

5 October 2017

For the third year in a row, Samsung has squeezed out another lemon at the 12th annual Shonky Awards with its pricey washer/dryer that just doesn't do the job.

"Using a whopping 210 litres to dry a full load, Samsung's WD16J9845KG washer/dryer combo scored a zero in our drying time test," says CHOICE's Head of Media Tom Godfrey.

Priced at an eye-watering $2999, the machine takes six-and-a-half hours to dry a full load.

"In the time it takes to dry a load of clothes, you could nab a cheap fare from Sydney to the Gold Coast and dry them on the beach every week for nearly a year instead of buying this shonky product," says Mr Godfrey.

"That price doesn't include the extra $400 a year it would cost just to run the appliance".

Samsung's washer/dryer ended up with a score of 26% overall - the lowest of all the washing machines CHOICE tested.

In previous years, Samsung's top loader washing machines and the Samsung Galaxy Note7 phone both received Shonky Awards because of their tendency to unexpectedly catch fire.

"We really didn't think we'd be inviting Samsung back to the Shonky Awards for another year in a row but for a washer/dryer that fails to dry clothes efficiently Samsung has pulled off a hat-trick," says Mr Godfrey.

"It's worth pointing out that you could put out several of the fires caused by Samsung's top loader washing machines and the Galaxy Note7 with the bucket-loads of water its washer/dryer combo uses."

Other 2017 Shonky Award recipients were:
