01.Introduction

Test results for ten 106cm LCD and plasma TVs priced $1499 to $3649

The perfect television has high-quality picture and sound, as well as many useful features, including a wide range of outputs and inputs for your accessories. It will also have a sensibly designed remote control, and its manuals and on-screen menus will be easy to understand and use. We wish. In reality, very few models get everything right.

Through our rigorous testing we reveal which 106cm TVs:

  • Have the best picture quality.
  • Have the best sound quality.
  • Are the easiest to use.
  • Use the least energy on standby (important, especially at this size).

While most models in this test are now discontinued, they are still available second-hand, so our ratings are still relevant. For the latest 106cm models, see our review of 102-107cm LCD and plasma TVs. Our LCD vs plasma buying guide may also help with your purchase decision.

Home theatre audio is a complicated business. Chris Ruggles talks you through 5 of the 10 most common surround sound mistakes.

Save money on your new television

Our report will save you money for years to come and goes beyond the sales hype to reveal:

  • Whether you really need to spend more on higher resolution.
  • Which of the cheaper models performed best.
  • Which of the televisions cost the least to run.

And our findings?

Firstly, we had to conclude there is no longer much difference between price or the performance of LCD and plasma TVs. Inbuilt sound is the weak point of most of these TVs - we strongly suggest using a separate sound system. More pixels don't guarantee a better picture. All of the televisions have an inbuilt digital tuner, and we put them through their paces to see which will continue to work in difficult reception areas.
