Table notes
* Shelves are interchangeable between main and half-ovens unless otherwise stated.
# Discontinued.
(A) New 'CS' version has telescopic runners, racking system, and roasting dish. Changes may affect performance, and will affect ease of use.
(B) Replaced by 'PDR' version with a new generation cooler door (claims 43°C max).
(C) Replaced by version '2' that has a 3000W grill, which may improve its grill performance.
(D) Catalytic liners are reversible.
(E) Smokeless grill tray.
(F) Shelves do not fit in the half-oven; only a baking tray is supplied.
Overall score is made up of:
- Performance: 60%
- Ease of use: 40%
Performance is a result of the oven and grill scores in both the main and half-oven weighted equally.
Features See What to Look For for an explanation of these features. All ovens have a clock and a timer,
Preheat time This is the time taken to heat the oven from room temperature (about 20°C) to 200°C using the fan-forced function. If this function is not available, fan-assisted is used, if not, the convection bake is used.
Measured internal useable volume This is calculated from measurements of the oven floor to the grill element runner to runner, and the depth of the shelf.
Running costs Based on running the oven 150°C above room temperature for one hour, three times per week for 10 years at 17 cents per kWh. Where available, the fan-forced function is used (all main ovens have this); if not, the fan-assist is used, and for models that don’t have that the top and bottom elements (convection or traditional bake) is used.
Price Recommended retail, as of May 2011.
How we test
Note: We’ve changed the method to suit double ovens, so it’s not possible to compare these ovens to those we’ve previously tested.
Performance CHOICE’s home economist, Fiona Mair, cooks a range of delicious meals to test the ability of the ovens to perform over a range of temperatures, times and functions.
In the main oven:
Oven She bakes scones to test how well and evenly the ovens bake at a high temperature. Meringues are baked to assess how well the models handle cooking at a low temperature for long periods, and custard tarts to see how the ovens cope with a combination food and the “turn down” capacity. She also cooks a freshly-made pizza to see how well each model can crisp the base and evenly cook the toppings.
Grill Fiona toasts bread to assess the speed, evenness and heating area of each grill, as well as its ability to produce a quantity of evenly toasted bread in a short time. She also grills sausages to assess the speed, evenness and heating area. Grilling sausages also creates a lot of mess in the oven so it helps her assess how easy each model is to clean.
In the half-oven:
Fiona repeated the toast, scones and pizza tests to assess the performance of the half-ovens.
Ease of use is based on the ease of use of the controls, clarity of the labels, using and cleaning the grill and the oven.
