Does your fresh fruit go bad before you've had a chance to eat it? If you tend to find yourself wasting good fruit, or just want to discover another way to enjoy it, then you might want to take a look at the latest kitchen gadget - the Yonanas. All you need to do is freeze your overripe fruit and then the Yonanas will turn it into a frozen dessert.
Bananas are the main ingredient, but you can combine other frozen fruits as well. To use the Yonanas:
- Peel the bananas first (bananas that are spotted are best – the more brown spots, the sweeter the taste) and then freeze them for at least 24 hours.
- For the best consistency, slightly thaw your frozen fruit for about 10 to 15 minutes before using the Yonanas.
- Lock in the chute, place a bowl under the dispenser and you're ready to go.
- Insert a quarter of the banana, then a handful of frozen fruit and repeat.
- Use the plunger provided to push the frozen fruit through the chute.
Before you know it you'll have a tasty dessert with a texture like ice-cream in your bowl. And you're not only limited to fruit, you can also put frozen chocolate through the Yonanas to give your ice-cream a crunchy texture.
Fiona Mair, home economist from CHOICE's test kitchen put the Yonanas to the test by making three frozen desserts using a combination of banana and mango; banana and berries; and rockmelon, pineapple and banana. Overall, she was impressed with its performance - each combination had a creamy ice-cream texture. Fiona found that because you're combining fruit in the chute at alternate times the fruit doesn't always combine together evenly. She also found that the last bit of fruit fed into the chute can tend to get clogged and may not always get processed. You'll need to move the bowl around because the fruit comes out flat through the dispenser. It can also melt quickly.
Ease of use
The Yonanas is a compact unit that's very easy to use. It's easy to assemble, disassemble and store. The small chute means you'll have to chop your fruit into small pieces. It's noisy, lightweight and can easily move on the bench if knocked. It's very easy to clean – all components are dishwasher safe, and if you need to remove any clogged fruit, simply rinse under hot water to melt it away.
The Yonanas is a great alternative to ice-cream as it's low in fat, has no added sugar or preservatives and is dairy free. The best results are achieved when the fruit is combined with a banana as it gives it a creamy consistency but mango and rockmelon also work well as an alternative.
If you have a Vitamix
or any other powerful blender, you can achieve a similar result by freezing your fruit and combining with water, milk or cream in your blender.
