01 .Introduction

greening-your-homeOne way to combat soaring energy prices is to make your home as energy efficient as possible. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics' 1998 report Australian social trends, "between 1974-75 and 1995-96, household energy consumption increased by 46%". And it's still on the rise.

The planned introduction of a carbon price has created further uncertainty around future energy prices, so it makes sense to focus on something you can control: the energy efficiency rating of the appliances and electronic goods you purchase for your home.

We’ve pored through scores of recent CHOICE tests and selected the highest eco scorers across various categories, including kitchen, laundryhome entertainment and lighting, to create a list of green buys for you, the Australian consumer.

We've also included ways to reduce household energy usage without spending a fortune greening your home with new products. Because, as we know, it all adds up in the end.

Green Buys

GreenBuy_35 All products featuring the CHOICE Green Buy stamp have meet the specific criteria required to be classified a Green Buy: a good overall performer that's very energy- and, where applicable, water-efficient. The product is produced by a brand with a good reliability rating, whose combined purchase price and running cost is among the lowest of those tested.
