Like the online questionnaires and checklists, these apps don’t replace a real medical consultation, but could be a bit of fun and might indicate a problem that needs further checking and raise questions for you to discuss with your doctor.

Vision experts say we should have an eye exam every year or two, especially if you’re over 40. And if you’re having problems with your eyesight, it’s definitely time to visit your optometrist. This short eye test may pick up things you were otherwise unaware of, such as astigmatism, as well as testing your colour vision and visual acuity.
Blood pressure monitor cuff and app
iHealth and Withings
There are quite a few free apps that can be used track your blood pressure, as measured from your personal blood pressure monitor. But two companies have gone one step further, providing a hardware blood pressure cuff that attaches to your iPhone or iPad and actually measures your blood pressure too. Tests indicate they’re reasonably accurate, as much so as other personal devices, so if you’ve been told by your doctor to monitor blood pressure at home, and you don’t already have a monitor, these could be worth considering. Shop around online – they’re more expensive in Australian than overseas.
12 Minute Run
How fit are you? The Cooper test is a common way to test cardiovascular fitness: simply run as far as you can for 12 minutes, and look up the distance run on charts which predict your fitness level according to age and gender. The problem is accurately measuring the distance run – not so easy unless you’ve got access to standard athletic track. But now there are apps like this one which use your phone’s GPS to track how far you’ve run while simultaneously timing you, and allowing you to keep records to measure progress.
Siemens Hearing Test
People suffering from hearing loss find it difficult to distinguish words when in noisy environments. This hearing test app plays nonsense words against background noise, and you have to choose the word you heard from a list provided. While other hearing tests depend on volume, with this test the volume doesn’t matter.
