Seagate has embraced the thin and light concept with a pocket-sized, super-slim storage drive. Available with brushed metallic silver finish or in basic black, the 500GB HDD is about as thick as a pen and weighs just 150 grams.
It uses USB 3.0, which can transfer 1GB of data in about 50 seconds, and it works across multiple platforms. Seagate has included a specific version of the Paragon NTFS for Mac utility, so you won’t need to reformat the drive.
Seagate’s Dashboard utility software includes easy-to-use backup tools for scheduling automated backups. You can also upload directly to Facebook, Flickr and YouTube, but it takes more steps to do so compared with a standard web browser. The handy Facebook backup function will also download your pictures, and those you’re tagged in, to the drive.
The backup tool comes with 4GB of cloud storage, free for one year. After that it costs $20 for 10GB, $50 for 25GB or $100 for 50GB.
Although other portable drives give you double the storage or more for around the same price, they’re not nearly as slim as this Seagate. It’s so thin, you could easily mistake it for a portable SSD – but that would only give you 128GB for a similar cost.
