Visa has re-launched its online payment system as Visa Checkout. It can be used online as well as with smartphones and tablets. It replaces Visa's first online payment system, known as V.me by Visa, which was introduced in 2013.
To use Visa Checkout, consumers must first register an account, and then give the username and password on a shopping site that has a Visa Checkout payment button; they can also use the mobile app. Both Visa and Mastercard credit cards can be registered to use for payments with Visa Checkout.
Event Cinemas is the first to join Visa Checkout. Retailers that are already offering V.me by Visa as a payment option, including Flight Centre, JB Hi-Fi, DealsDirect and Bonds, will move to the rebranded Visa Checkout network.
The popularity of mobile and online shopping is prompting merchants and retailers alike to find ways to capture more consumers and take on the online payment giant PayPal.
Coles this week launched its Coles Mobile Wallet that links with the Coles credit card. It works with the smartphone app and the Coles PayTag, which attaches to a smartphone for tap-and-go payments using the Mastercard PayPass system.
