Susan Ryan AO invokes campaigning spirit of Ruby Hutchison

Ruby Hutchison was the founder of the Australian Consumers’ Association, the organisation we now know as CHOICE.

Each year, to ensure the legacy of Ruby Hutchison lives on, CHOICE invites a prominent Australian to deliver the Ruby Hutchison Memorial Lecture.  The 2012 lecture was delivered on 14th March by the Hon. Susan Ryan AO (pictured), Age Discrimination Commissioner with the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Among the many positions Ms Ryan has held, she was once a senator representing the ACT in Federal Parliament. She was also the first woman to hold a cabinet position in a federal Labor government, serving in the Hawke ministry as Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on the Status of Women and Special Minister of State.

Susan Ryan’s lecture, delivered on the eve of the 2012 ACCC conference in Melbourne, was titled ‘Age discrimination and the internet - older people in the 21st century’.
