01.Evaporative air conditioners raze homes in Perth bushfires

Fire investigators have concluded that several of the homes razed in the Perth bushfires earlier this month were destroyed by rooftop evaporative air-conditioning units. “If a home has an evaporative air conditioner on [during a bushfire] the system will draw smoke and embers into the unit, which will land on the unit’s filter pads and start a fire,” a Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) spokesperson says.

FESA identified the problem twelve years ago and has been working with manufacturers and retailers to improve safety. FESA advises owners of evaporative air conditioners to switch off units and keep filters damp during bushfires.
