01.New York, London ... Melbourne?
Research released by Roy Morgan this week reveals that while we might be dreaming of exotic locations for holidays the reality is more likely to be somewhere a lot closer.
While the USA, UK and New Zealand are listed as the top five places Australians say they would most like to holiday, the reality is quite different with domestic destinations making up eight of the 10 places most visited by Australians in the past year. New Zealand and the UK scraped in at ninth and tenth respectively.
However Melbourne ranks as a star destination taking out the number one spot in both polls as the preferred dream destination and actual destination.
Jane Ianniello, international director of tourism, travel and leisure at Roy Morgan research says domestic destinations like Melbourne have consistent appeal with Australians. "While overseas rates highly in terms of preference, the relative ease and affordability of domestic travel has a huge influence on where we actually take our holidays," Ianniello says.
