01.Beware digital gold diggers
There are some unscrupulous types going door-to-door targeting vulnerable people in Brisbane, Mildura and Mount Gambier selling over-priced set-top-boxes with empty promises of Government reimbursement. Don't get caught out.
The facts
The Australian Government is not engaged in any door-to-door sales and is not engaging anyone to do so on its behalf. If you're potentially entitled to help when the analogue TV is turned off in your area, Centrelink will contact you and offer you an opportunity to participate. You can get more details at www.digitalready.gov.au.
If you've been approached by someone selling set-top-boxes door-to-door, you have a cooling off period and should immediately check to see if the box you've purchased is over-priced.
If you think it is, or that you've been mislead in any way, you should contact the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission's 'Scam Watch' website for your state's Office of Fair Trading contact details.
For information on set-top-boxes you can read our test article. The Australian Government Digital Switchover Taskforce has put a training scheme in place for retailers to try to ensure you're getting consistent advice. Stores that are participating are listed via a link on the FAQ section of the www.digitalready.gov.au website.
